When you start your Spring cleaning you may not think to make sure your locks and keys are ready for the change of seasons but the safety and security of your home depends greatly on the locks and keys functioning correctly. One way to prolong the life of your locks and keys is to check them and perform any necessary maintenance.
It’s as easy as 1,2,3 to Spring clean and test your locks.
1. Clean
Start with a simple clean of your locks and keys. You can even just make this a part of your overall cleaning routine. Take a mild detergent, and a damp cloth, and gently clean the outer part of the lock and handle to remove any abrasive debris. Avoid any acidic or corrosive cleaning materials just stick to mild cleaners suitable for use on metal and wood.
2. Lubricate
This is something you can do any time of the year but Spring cleaning is a great time to start. Avoid a petroleum-based lubricant, instead opt for graphite. Gently apply a small amount of lubricant to the keyhole and to ensure it is distributed and functional just put your key in it several times to test the lock function.
3. Test
Once you have cleaned and lubricated your locks, you can test their functionality. Itβs a simple task and just involves locking and unlocking doors to ensure they are all working properly. Keep an eye open for any lose cylinders, sticking locks, or any other dysfunctions as this could be sign of a bigger issue with your locks.
